Clerkship Overview

MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center – Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency with Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle (PMSR/RRA) Our clerkship offers fourth-year podiatric medical students an immersive experience in a high-volume, surgically intensive residency program with a strong emphasis on foot and ankle reconstruction, trauma, wound care, and limb salvage. Students work directly with our attending faculty and residents, gaining hands-on exposure in both hospital and outpatient settings. The clerkship is designed to reflect the day-to-day realities of residency here—fast-paced, collaborative, and surgically focused. Educational Emphasis Advanced surgical management of foot and ankle pathology, including reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery Acute care and trauma management in a Level II trauma center environment Comprehensive wound care, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy Multidisciplinary collaboration with orthopedics, vascular surgery, infectious disease, and internal medicine Evidence-based practice reinforced through structured didactics

Residency Overview

This PMSR program provides a comprehensive surgical education through a positive learning environment where interaction with podiatric and orthopedic faculty is highly encouraged. The program is well-rounded with an emphasis on wound care, limb salvage and orthopaedic trauma. Residents can expect to perform a high number of surgical procedures.The resident has the opportunity to learn from over 22 podiatric surgeons and our tremendous relationship with orthopedics provides the ability to work with multiple orthopedic surgeons on a daily basis. A high emphasis is placed on didactic activities, the resident can expect to meet weekly in radiology conference, grand rounds, journal clubs, and pathology lab.
