Clerkship Overview

This externship is a busy clinical and academic month. Externs will be able to participate in all aspects of clinical care including inpatient rounds, outpatient clinic, elective, limb salvage, and trauma surgeries at Scripps Mercy Hospital. In addition there may be opportunities to scrub and/or observe cases at Scripps Green, Sharp, and Kaiser San Diego hospitals. Students will also have the opportunity to shadow at a private office and gain practice management exposure. At the end of the month, externs are required to give a 15 minute presentation on a topic of their choice. During the month, externs are expected attend all academic sessions including: journal club, cadaver lab, weekly lectures, and weekly radiology rounds, where you will be interpreting x-rays and formulating surgical treatment plans.

Residency Overview

We have four 1st, four 2nd, and four 3rd year positions. One 3rd year will spend the 3rd year in San Diego, splitting time between Scripps Mercy San Diego, Kaiser San Diego, Scripps Green & Sharp Rees Stealy. Three residents will spend their 3rd year at the Kaiser Program in Sacramento (30 podiatrists). We have rotations at Kaiser San Diego (13 podiatrists), Sharp Rees Stealy (8 podiatrists) & Scripps Clinic/Scripps Green Hospital (5 podiatrists), Navy (2 podiatrists) besides Scripps Mercy during the 2nd year. There is a strong emphasis on biomechanics as well as surgery and trauma. There are excellent outside rotations as well. The first 2 years are the same. A separate selection category is set up for the two different 3rd year spots (San Diego & Sacramento)
