Introduction

The Captain James A. Lovell FHCC podiatric residency is a 3 year PMSR/RRA program located in Great Lakes, which is 30 miles north of Chicago. It is the only Veteran Affairs (VA) hospital in the nation that sees a combination of VA and Active Duty patients, which provides a diverse population, ranging from pediatrics and other dependents of military personnel, to active duty sports medicine, and to veterans of varying ages. There is a 40,000+ new patient population per year which allows for a high volume and wide variety of surgical cases, with a special emphasis on reconstructive surgery, sports medicine and trauma. Residents in our program follow patients from the pre-operative workup, to the OR, and post-operatively to allow for complete and continuous care. In addition to their specific podiatric training, our residents work with the orthopedics department on all foot and ankle related cases. All core rotations are completed at the main hospital. In addition, there are 4 surgical centers and hospitals affiliated with the program that allows residents to scrub with an additional 15+ podiatric and orthopedic surgeons in the community.
