Saint Joseph Health System

We are a PMSR/RRA 36-month program that offers comprehensive training in both forefoot and reconstructive rearfoot/ankle surgery. We initiate surgical training early on in residency which helps residents gain confidence and develop a sense of independence required to be successful physicians. Residents will have assigned patients to enhance their clinical skills in our resident clinic, with a focus on resident driven preoperative assessment, radiographic and biomechanical review, surgical planning, and postoperative care. Our moderate-sized teaching hospital allows our residents to develop strong working relationships with our excellent preceptors in vascular surgery, general surgery, internal medicine, infectious disease, and our superb wound healing center. We have an excellent sports medicine team as well that treats high level athletes and sports injuries. Our weekly academics focuses on engaging dialogue and on pertinent education that directly relates to the resident experience. Our third-year residents have access to work with the region’s traumatologist group. The goal of our program is to prepare the resident for practice immediately upon graduation with confidence in performing forefoot and rearfoot elective surgery, non-elective surgery, ankle surgery, inpatient and wound management, practice management, billing/coding, and running a productive and efficient clinic.

Saint Joseph Health System offers two positions per year in its PMSR/RRA residency program. The program provides residents with exceptional hands-on surgical training in forefoot and rearfoot procedures, including both reconstructive and non-reconstructive surgery, limb salvage, and trauma management. Residents benefit from strong interdisciplinary collaboration, with vascular, general, and orthopedic surgeons who are highly receptive to podiatry residents and actively involve them in surgical cases. Training spans across four area hospitals and three ambulatory surgery centers, with residents also responsible for the in-house care of patients at Saint Joseph Health System. The educational curriculum includes Journal Club, weekly academic sessions, the ACFAS Surgical Skills Course, external fixation in-services, cadaver labs, and attendance at regional and national conferences.
