Introduction
The primary goal of the McLaren Oakland Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program is to provide an academically and clinically sound training program for the Resident, so that they can acquire outstanding knowledge and clinical skills in podiatric medicine and surgery (includes reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery credentials). The program has a strong emphasis on balancing clinical and surgical training with academic teaching and research. The aim of the program is to provide the trainee with the basic and clinical knowledge, foot and ankle surgical skills (elective, reconstructive, trauma, wound care, and limb salvage), development of clinical judgment, experiences in non-podiatry comprehensive medical and surgical subspecialty, research, ability to manage patient expectations and complications, ability to critically analyze and formulate treatment strategies, development in teaching and lecturing skills, professionalism and interpersonal skills required as a specialist practicing in podiatric medicine and surgery. The training will prepare Residents to excel as highly competent podiatric surgeons providing compassionate and comprehensive care in all areas of podiatric medicine and surgery. The training curriculum will allow the Resident to become independent active learners to be used for the rest of his/her career. We value the Resident as a valuable member of the team in providing input as to the treatment and care of the patient.Residency Director

Clerkship Overview
This is a hands-on active clerkship! As a student, there are high expectations because of the exposure you will have with other services and residency programs. You were chosen to do an externship here and hope you take this seriously and respect the privilege you have been granted. Your performance on a daily basis needs to be at its best since you will have a relatively short time to make your impression to the residents and attendings who will be selecting next year’s incoming residents. This is not an environment to be passive. Play an active role in learning- ask questions and be prepared to step in and help. More importantly, you represent the podiatric profession and the podiatric residency program to the medical community you will be interacting. Prepare yourself every night for the next day’s cases by reading references and recent articles. These are the same expectations placed on our residents. Students are encouraged to take pictures throughout your time here for case presentations. You are expected to have a presentation ready towards the end of your rotation. We want you to enjoy your time here as well as maximize your learning opportunities. Time and time again, we have been told by past externs that our month was the most insightful and educational month they had in comparison to other externships. Our goal is to make all other months seem boring compared to the time you spend with us.

Residency Overview
The residency program is designated as a PMSR / RRA certified residency program by CPME. The rotations include a wide range of general medical and surgical experiences in which residents are expected to function like their counterparts. Residents receive same salary and benefit package as all other trainees in the system. Experience and training is gained from a wide range of general and surgical rotations, in addition to on-going podiatric surgical experience at McLaren Oakland Hospital and other facilities. The program provides a busy Foot and Ankle clinic and has greatly increased surgical volume and surgical subspecialty experiences. Residents are expected to develop clinical and surgical skills such that they will be ready to function independently well before graduation. Furthermore, residents are expected to participate in research leading to presentation/publication.
