Introduction

University Hospitals’ podiatric training program began in the late 1980s with its inaugural class graduating three residents. Today, as part of University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, the residency program has grown to become one of the largest and most successful podiatric training programs in the United States. The Podiatric Medicine and Surgical Residency is a comprehensive, three-year, hands-on, surgery-based learning experience fully accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education. University Hospitals collaborates closely with Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, with contributions from both clinical and research faculty enhancing the residents’ education. The program benefits from the active participation and support of 12 area hospitals, six surgical centers, and 75 adjunct faculty members—including allopathic, osteopathic, and podiatric physicians—offering residents exposure to diverse urban, suburban, and rural care environments. Over the past 25 years, University Hospitals has graduated more than 250 podiatric residents, who now provide lower extremity care across nearly all 50 states in the U.S.

Residency Overview

PGY-1 focuses on podiatry clinic and inpatient surgery, along with diverse off-service rotations (e.g., Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, etc.) to build a strong medical foundation. PGY-2 and PGY-3 emphasize elective and trauma surgeries involving the forefoot, rearfoot, and ankle, with additional rotations in Plastic Surgery and Ortho/Trauma. Residents work with all core podiatrists to ensure comprehensive training. Clinic duties are integrated throughout to support pre-, peri-, and post-op care, with many 3-month rotations to maintain continuity with patients and faculty.
