Residency Overview
Southwest General sponsored a very successful PMSR-24 from 1999-2007 and began the PMSR/RRA-36 in 2021. During the gap we have been training residents from University Hospitals which has been phased out as Southwest residents replaced the UH residents. Beginning July 1, 2025 a total of 5 residents will be in training (2 PGY-1's, 1-PGY-2, and 2-PGY-3). At the present time we are approved for a total of 5 residents and anticipate taking 2 residents each year going forward pending approval in 2027 for a sixth position. With few exceptions training occurs at the hospital, nearby hospital surgery center, and offices on the hospital main campus. The program offers excellent volume and diversity of surgical procedures as well as a high volume of hospital and office patients. Once selected, it is desirable for residents to live near the hospital as we have a busy ED. Call is divided equitably between all residents. In addition to salary a $1500 stipend is available each training year for reimbursement of extra educational expenses.
