Introduction

The Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VAHCS Podiatric Residency Program is a 36-month PMSR-RRA. The clerkship is focused at the VA Medical Center, but residents also spend time in private practice settings, military clinic and hospital, and outpatient surgery centers along with core rotations at the VA. The program provides excellent, well-rounded training in podiatric medicine, podiatric surgery, reconstructive techniques, and wound care. Along with the podiatry clerkship and surgical residency programs, Atlanta VA also offers a CPME approved Limb Preservation Podiatry Fellowship Program in close collaboration with the vascular surgery department.

Residency Overview

Busy outpatient clinic with many patient encounters, wound care, and complex cases. Surgery is wide-ranging including forefoot and rearfoot. Patient pathology is unique and vast. Core rotations are within VA. External rotations include surgery at metro centers, a 2-week Bako path mini-residency, clinical peds, and an annual rotation at Martin Army Community Hospital for increased trauma experience and interaction with active-duty service (parachute jump training site). Robust academics with journal club, board reviews, case defense, fellow presentations, joint vascular conference, VA virtual didactics, and surgical M&M. Residents lecture at GPMA yearly. Many research opportunities - annual research required. Our graduates are well-prepared for ABFAS and ABPM boards. Alumni serve in meaningful roles in this and other VA facilities, are active with local and extended private practice and research communities and are affiliated with other prestigious academic institutions.
