Program Overview
Program Emphasis
The program is designed to help residents develop into well‑rounded, compassionate podiatric physicians. It provides a strong foundation for future clinical practice while allowing each resident to shape their training based on their individual interests and career goals. We work closely with residents to understand the direction they want to pursue and actively support them in developing focused skills in areas such as research, biomechanics, limb salvage, or surgery. Clerkship Overview
The Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program offers a well-rounded clerkship experience focused on resident education, surgical training, interdisciplinary collaboration, and progressive clinical autonomy. Students work closely with our attending physicians and residents in both clinic and surgical settings while gaining exposure to forefoot, rear foot, ankle, wound care, diabetic limb preservation, biomechanics, billing, and reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. Our program emphasizes mentorship, hands-on learning, weekly academic conferences, cadaveric training opportunities, and a collegial team environment. Students from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine are welcome to complete their core clerkship rotations at our program through established educational affiliations.

Please inform her if you will be rotating at another VA facility before arriving at the Charlie Norwood VA for coordination. Watch for emails from her, as the VA onboarding process is detailed and time‑sensitive. Even a small oversight can delay a clerk from participating in the rotation.

Residency Overview
The Podiatry Residency Program at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center offers a structured, supportive training environment that develops confident, capable, and compassionate podiatric physicians. As a one‑resident‑per‑year program, we provide individualized mentorship and full access to clinical and surgical experiences without competition. Residents identify their career interests early, and faculty work closely with them to tailor training accordingly. Collaboration across multiple medical centers broadens exposure and enhances adaptability. Known for strong work‑life balance and a culture of autonomy, the program prepares graduates for success in private practice, hospital‑based care, advanced training, or academic roles.
