Clerkship Overview
The purpose of the Podiatric Externship Program within the Division of Foot & Ankle Surgery at the University of Florida-Jacksonville is to provide the student with a well-rounded educational experience in the hospital environment and a familiarity with the podiatric residency training program. The Externship allows the student to closely observe sophisticated reconstructive procedures of the foot and ankle, as well as the care of patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings and management of trauma of the lower extremity.
As part of our commitment, the hospital accepts students from all podiatric medical colleges, up to four per month. The extern works closely with the residents, learning the intricacies of hospital protocol while gaining wide exposure to foot and ankle surgery. The intent of the Podiatric Externship Program is to provide the student with a firm academic background and to demonstrate the clinical relevance of this knowledge. This Externship will assist the student in preparing for the direct, hands-on experience that will be part of their ongoing educational training.
