Introduction
Welcome to the Podiatry Program at Wake Forest Baptist Health, a nationally recognized academic medical center based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our externship offers a dynamic clinical experience with exposure to a broad range of podiatric pathology and surgical procedures, including forefoot and rearfoot reconstruction, diabetic limb salvage, wound care, biomechanics, and sports medicine. Welcome to the Wake Forest Baptist Podiatry Clerkship!
Here are some things you can expect during your rotation:
On-Call Experience: Work on-call alongside our podiatry residents at both our main Wake Forest Baptist campus and our High Point Medical Center, gaining valuable insight into emergency and inpatient podiatric care.
Academic Engagement: Participate in weekly podiatry and orthopedic academic meetings where case discussions, surgical planning, and literature review enhance clinical knowledge.
Hands-On Learning: Attend our monthly cadaver labs to practice surgical techniques and join our journal clubs to stay current with evolving evidence-based practices.
Community Outreach: Once a month, externs have the opportunity to volunteer at the DEAC Clinic, providing podiatric care to underserved populations in the community—a rewarding and humbling experience.
Beyond the hospital, Winston-Salem offers a vibrant lifestyle with plenty to explore. Residency Overview
The Podiatric Residency Training Program at Wake Forest Baptist Health provides the recent graduate with an opportunity to gather extensive experience in the identification and treatment of pathologic and traumatic conditions associated with the pediatric as well as adult foot and ankle. The opportunity to participate in research and exposure to related medical sciences is also afforded to our residents. The teaching program will attempt to demonstrate to the resident an effective method for improving community foot and ankle health and to better prepare the resident for his/her position in the total community healthcare structure.
