Introduction

The BIDMC Podiatric Medicine and Surgery with Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle RRA residency is a 3-year training program with 2 residents in each year. BIDMC is a tertiary care, academic medical center and a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. The residency is designed with a rotational structure with an emphasis on resource based, competency driven, assessment validated training. The resident is provided with a greater responsibility in patient care and decision making as they progress through their training. These experiences coincide with a complementary curriculum of advancing didactic study. The residents and attending faculty have teaching responsibilities to students, medical staff / house officers and the surrounding community. The rotations of the residency include: podiatric surgery, clinical podiatric medicine, internal medicine, vascular surgery, emergency medicine, medical imaging, anesthesiology, endocrinology, rheumatology, behavioral medicine, infectious disease, orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery. The program has a focus on diabetic limb salvage and reconstruction / revisional surgery. In addition to BIDMC, the residents cover surgical cases at the VA medical center, BI- Needham, Brockton Hospital, Norwood Surgery Center, New England Baptist Surgery Center.

Clerkship Overview

Beth Israel Deaconess is a primary teaching hospital of Harvard Med School with a level 1 Trauma Center. Externs will enjoy access to the extensive libraries on campus, clinical skills labs, and cutting edge lectures in medicine, surgery and research. Externs are exposed to all aspects of foot and ankle pathology with direct hands on care of patients in clinical, inpatient and surgical settings. Typically 2 externs are selected each month, however 3 externs per month will be considered depending upon the quality of the applicant pool.

Residency Overview

BIDMC is a primary teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. The training program is grounded in BIDMC's long-standing values of compassion, empathy and service to provide the highest quality of training. The resident is provided with a greater responsibility in patient care and decision making as they progress through their training. Full scope of podiatric medical and surgical training is available through BIDMC and the affiliated training sites. These experiences coincide with a complementary curriculum of advancing didactic study. Residents enjoy access to the clinical skills labs / workshops, lectures in all aspects of medicine, surgery and research, board review and journal club. Research is emphasized and residents are encouraged and supported to submit posters, manuscripts and chapters during training.
