St. Mary's General Hospital

Introduction

The program is based out of St. Mary's General Hospital in Passaic, NJ. We also cover three surgery centers and two additional hospitals in the system (St. Clare's of Dover and also St. Clare's of Denville). We perform a wide array of surgical procedures to cover the basic as well as the advanced needs of our patient population. We regularly perform high level External Ring Fixation, ORIF of Pilon and ankle fractures, Transverse Bone Transport for PAD, Skin and muscle flaps and extensive forefoot reconstructive surgery. You will be very well prepared for practice at the completion of the program, however almost all graduating residents matriculated onto high level fellowship training to be on the cutting edge of our field. The program is associate with three fellowships and regularly hosts national conferences in person and also online. This program works collaboratively with orthopedics, vascular, and general surgery.

Program Overview

Program Emphasis

High volume Reconstructive Surgery of Foot & Ankle. Trauma of Foot & Ankle. Diabetic wound care & limb salvage. Two community medical centers for elective case coverage. Typically obtain MAV Jan of 2nd year. We usually have 4-5 time the MAV of hindfoot and ankle procedures. Strong emphasis on adult reconstruction, Internal fixation, Ilizarov external ring fixation, and acute trauma.

Residency Overview

Our institution offers a well-rounded reconstructive, podiatric medical/surgical program. The residents cover the Wound Center and the Lower Extremity Fellow Clinic weekly, which offers continuity of patient care from the ER, to inpatient and also outpatient. Podiatry takes all ER foot and ankle trauma call, year round. The residents will gain experience handling forefoot, rearfoot and ankle trauma, both in the ER and in the OR. The residents will also manage complex Charcot foot and ankle reconstruction with the use of external ring fixation. We perform total ankle replacements at our facility. Basic and advanced reconstructive foot and ankle courses including internal and external fixation, limb salvage and practice management will be provided to the residents.
