LIJ Forest Hills is a member of the Northwell Health System, the 3rd largest health care system in the US. Our well diversified Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency in Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle (PMSR-RRA) is located in the heart of Queens, NY which offers extensive training in Forefoot/Rearfoot Surgery, Wound Care, Diabetic Limb Salvage, Internal Medicine, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Endocrinology, Behavioral Science, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, and Infectious Disease. Residents will have full access to all of the educational benefits of the health system which has a new Medical School at Donald and Barbra Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell as well as research opportunities at the Feinstein Institute for Medicine. We are affiliated with a substantial amount of hospitals and surgery centers.

Program Overview

Program Emphasis

Our program offers comprehensive training in all areas of podiatry, with a strong emphasis on both clinical care and surgical management. Surgical experience encompasses the full spectrum of podiatric procedures, including but not limited to amputations, wound debridements, elective forefoot and rearfoot surgeries, Charcot reconstruction, and trauma involving the foot, rearfoot, and ankle.

Clerkship Overview

Students will have the opportunity to rotate at our main hospital, Long Island Jewish Forest Hills, as well as at Nassau University Medical Center, one of our Level One trauma centers. Daily activities may include rounding on patients, working in clinics, assisting with trauma cases, and participating in a wide range of podiatric procedures—such as amputations, wound debridements, and both forefoot and hindfoot elective surgeries—with a strong emphasis on advanced surgical techniques. Students are also encouraged to attend our monthly cadaver bioskills labs. Academic sessions are held twice a week and include Northwell Grand Rounds and morning meeting discussions with various attending physicians affiliated with our program. We strongly encourage having a car.

PGY1 & 2 get $1,800 educational allowance yearly. In PGY3 the total is $3,600, for educational expense. Breakfast is provided twice a week, snacks, coffee, and water.
